Womens coats guide: Every coat style and how to wear them - cosmopolitan.com

If you type 'womens coats' into Google, the choices can easily feel overwhelming. But the best place to start when looking for your next investment buy is by thinking about which style, colour and shape would complement your wardrobe the most.

To help you decide, we've highlighted some of the key winter coat styles for 2019/2020 to know for this season. After all, you don't want to rush your choice, as a good coat is the one staple you'll be wearing throughout the chilly winter months.

Our advice:

  • Take your time and be sure to try on coats in varying fabrics and cuts to find what works for you.
  • Leave room for layers, especially thick sweaters, cardigans and gilets that you can wear underneath when the temperature drops.
  • Length is key. While these aren't hard-and-fast rules, it helps to have some steer on what coat length works best for you. If you're petite, a long coat could swamp you, so you might want to think about shorter styles like pea-coats and mid-length coats. Conversely, if you're taller, longer styles are a couple of fail-safe options to consider.

1. Teddy bear coat

The teddy coat's appeal lies in how soft it is - you simply want to snuggle into it. You can't help but touch, feel and envelop yourself in its teddy-bear like goodness.

The teddy coat also ticks all the right boxes: smart, warm and most of all comforting. Perfect to wear on a brunch-date and for weekend mooching around in your local hipster coffee bar. It's also a really cool winter coat option, especially when worn with a boyish bucket hat and chunky dad trainers.

When it comes to buying the perfect teddy, go big or go home. Wear it oversize (consider buying one size up if in doubt) as the style of this coat is all about having maximum swagger.

Finally, it easily doubles as a great makeshift blanket, just throw it over you when you're on a long journey and no-one will bother you.

2. Faux fur coat

The faux fur coat practically radiates luxury. Firstly, it's a versatile style, coming in many shapes ranging from full length faux fur overcoats, to cropped bomber jackets and smart pea-coats.

Plus, contrary to what you might think, ,any faux fur coats are machine washable now, which makes that taking care of them sooooo much easier and you needn't fear experimenting with paler pastel versions.

If you want something more statement, animal print styles reinforce the feline appeal of this coat style. Dress it up with heels and a sexy little black dress for a night out, or wear it for a casual date with high waist jeans and retro loafers.

In short, you'll never regret buying a good quality faux fur coat as it's the ultimate party coat: perfect for when you need to wear something warm and cosy for an evening out or a special occasion.

3. Leather coat

A leather coat is pièce de résistance in winter luxury. This can take the form of a double-breasted overcoat style (belted at the waist), or a shorter length single-breasted button through. Either way, prepare to make this an investment piece to keep in your wardrobe season after season.

Classic colours like black, brown, olive green and navy blue are timeless, fail-safe options. While love the look and feel of a high-shine rain-mac, brightening up a rainy Monday morning, it's worth thinking about when you'd wear your coat.

If you're looking fro a coat you can wear in the rain, real leather might not be the best choice. Now there are plenty of non-leather coats around which are totally rain-proof (they're also more affordable and vegan-friendly).

Note: If your leather coat does get wet, dab any excess water off with a dry towel, put on a sturdy hanger and leave to dry naturally, away from direct sunlight or heat.

4. Trench coat

Coat, £249, Mix/Regina Pyo. Jumper, £260, Sandro. Socks, £18, Falke. Earrings, £119, Thomas Sabo. Trainers, £60, Vans.

When you hear the word 'trench', you'll likely think of a double-breasted, belted style in a stone or black hue, made from heavy duty cotton But the trench can actually take many different forms, with a slew of unexpected colours and shapes to consider. Personally, we love the black belted double-breasted version above that boasts a longer, calf-grazing hemline.

If you want something to set your trench apart, look for a design with a statement collar for extra impact.

Whatever you decide, the trench is the definition of an 'investment piece', formal enough for work and smart enough to dress up a look-at-me party dress, or wear with a 70's knee-high boots.

5. Puffer

The puffer coat is not longer exclusively for ski enthusiasts. As the winter months take a grip you really need a coat that will keep you warm (we're talking style and substance).

When puffer shopping, it's perfectly acceptable to go oversize, as you'll need space for extra layers, hoodies and knits underneath. Remember, when you really need to keep warm, it's essential to keep the mid-part of your body covered to prevent chills to your kidneys, which this sleeping-bag-turned-jacket does so well.

Wear this quilt-like coat on long winter walks and when you're out scouring car-boot sales at the weekend.

Note: Some puffers are filled with down but many brands are offering vegan and synthetic alternatives to keep you snug as a bug.

6. Overcoat

An overcoat is literally what it says, something to wear over your clothes to keep you warm and protected from the elements. Overcoats generally sit below the knee, although they can go down to your ankles.

In terms of materials, wool overcoats are the most common, but they also come in heavy cotton, gabardine and wool mixed with synthetic fibres.

Overcoats are often belted - great for cinching in your waist during the cold weather - and are incredibly adaptable when you just want to wear a chunky sweater and wintery floral dress.

A great tip for winter months is to wear a lightweight gilet or even a high necked running top underneath your coat for an extra layer of insulation.
