Now Beer This: A Lost Style Found - Chapelboro.com

Even if you don’t drink beer, you can probably tell me that an IPA is a hoppy beer. If I ask you what a stout is, you would probably say “a dark beer.” I could maybe even ask you about a Hefeweizen and you might tell me, “that’s the sweet one that they put the orange in!” All good answers.

Without being a beer nerd, maybe without even liking beer, there’s enough knowledge out there in the aether that you can tell me some reasonably helpful facts about several beer styles. But there’s one out there that I bet you can’t tell me anything about: the English Mild. And that, my friends, is a pity.

The original use of the term “mild” when referring to beer meant that it was fresh and hadn’t been aged in a barrel very long (which, in those days, really meant that it wasn’t stale and infected). So that term could really refer to any style of beer that was fresh. But towards the end of World War I, the English were serving a low gravity beer referred to as a Mild. Today, we would call this a Session Beer — or in other words, a really good idea if you plan on drinking several.

Milds generally present on the darker side of beer, typically a glowing ruby color. The nose will present with toasty malts, perhaps a hint of roast and minimal-to-no hop aroma. Their flavor is generally toasty, slightly roasty, some caramel… think sweet tea in beer form!

Wait, what? You mean to tell me there’s a beer out there that drinks like sweet tea, isn’t so hoppy it tastes like lawn clippings, and is session strength (4-ish ABV)?!?!

Yes. Yes. That’s exactly what I’m telling you. This is a fantastic style that could fill a huge void for people who don’t really want to drink 8% hop monsters and pass out at the bar.

Sadly, this style didn’t get popular with the rise of craft beer several years ago. That trend went the direction of more alcohol/more hops, which is the exact opposite of what the English Mild is about. However, that sea is changing, and we’re starting to see some good versions — especially in the NC brewery scene. Green Man, Fortnight, Fonta Flora, and AMB all produce an English Mild. Right here in your backyard, Craftboro has an English Mild in their brewing rotation as well.

If you aren’t on this wagon yet, the time to get on is now. Get out there, ask around, and find yourself a nice English Mild to help lubricate a great conversation with friends. You will not regret it. Well, I guess it depends on what you talk about. But you won’t regret the beer, anyway.

Irlanda e Irlanda do Norte

Apple’s AR glasses deserve an Apple Watch-style ‘early access’ launch - VentureBeat

When Apple revealed this week that its wearables segment “is now the size of a Fortune 150 company,” making over $20 billion in 2019 and $10 billion in the holiday quarter, it reminded analysts how massively successful the Apple Watch and AirPods have become, despite their ignominious launches. While the AirPods initially suffered mostly from manufacturing delays and questions about their practicality or fashionability, the original 2015 Apple Watch was basically beta hardware — a device so bad that Apple all but ignored it after launching a “Series 1” replacement in 2016.

But that original Apple Watch served several important purposes for both Apple and its customers. First, it catalyzed the company to reimagine itself in the post-Steve Jobs era, bringing on experts from the fashion and luxury retail worlds to help market and sell the new devices. Second, it gave developers a tangible early sense of what a “smart watch” would and wouldn’t be useful for. And third, for better or worse, it let Apple gauge user reactions so it could safely choose the “horsepower over battery life” path it would follow in every future model.

Five years after releasing its first Watch, Apple is seemingly on the cusp of launching its next wearable — augmented reality glasses — and a major question is how long the company will keep working on the initial model before releasing it to the public. Will it wait until the AR glasses are as finished as the Apple Watch Series 1, which was arguably the bare minimum regular users deserved? Might it hold off for the equivalent of the Apple Watch Series 4, which former Apple designers recently revealed was the embodiment of their original design plan? Or will it begin by releasing another “Series 0” version that’s 80% of the way there?

Even though I have no regrets about jettisoning the original Apple Watch after months of dissatisfying performance — like many others did — I’m actually hoping that Apple’s AR glasses follow a similar release schedule. That’s primarily because I think third-party developers really need the time to publicly test AR apps using wearable rather than handheld hardware, and even early adopters will need some time to get used to AR wearables.

In the earliest days of the Apple Watch, some developers tried to release full-fledged games and complex apps for the platform. But once people actually wore the device, it became apparent that no one would keep holding an arm up for extended use. Quick, glanceable interactions were key, a realization that killed many developers’ wildest wearable dreams only after their time and money had been wasted.

Despite some enthusiasm for AR within the development community, no one’s truly sure what real-world usage paradigms will work for consumer AR glasses. On the hardware side, Google Glass proved that trying to tech-bro an AR wearable into fashionability and public acceptance didn’t work (at all), so there still are threshold questions about how much and where people will be willing to wear AR glasses in their daily lives. Some of these questions may get preliminary answers when Nreal Light becomes available to consumers, but if Apple is planning something substantially different or better, it might not be able to rely on rivals’ experiences.

There are plenty of questions remaining on the software side of AR. In the absence of Apple AR glasses, developers have been using ARKit software to develop AR apps and AR games for iPads and iPhones, but most of what’s been released amounts to forgettable novelties. Unless you consider Snapchat Lenses and Landmarkers to be AR, there’s only been one world-beating success in the space — Pokémon Go — and its developer Niantic is apparently creating its own AR hardware and software platform.

Getting “80% there” Apple AR glasses into developers’ and early adopters’ hands would help steer a lot of development efforts, and likely shape the nascent consumer AR industry in some positive ways. Borrowing a theme from the games industry, I’d call this “early access,” but with a critical proviso: Just like the original Apple Watch, there should be no special pricing or limits on who can buy the glasses on day one. Google and Microsoft both blew it with first-generation AR headsets by restricting initial access and pricing their devices at levels mainstream customers would never accept. Apple should offer its initial vision, warts and all, with the same pricing and broad availability as it hopes to use for subsequent models.

Launching early without features that would benefit a second-generation model (and become standard in all future versions) didn’t hurt the Apple Watch, which subsequently became better and more mainstream each year. Nor did it hurt the iPad, which similarly shipped to a somewhat skeptical initial audience before rocketing to success in later generations.

Over the past couple of weeks, Apple CEO Tim Cook has made a point to call out the impending importance of AR, saying last week in Ireland that “it’s the next big thing, and it will pervade our entire lives” — a point he reiterated during this week’s quarterly conference call with financial analysts. He’s been making similar statements for three and a half years, long enough that it’s time for real artists, as Steve Jobs and his former disciples at Apple used to say, to ship. So here’s hoping the hardware gets out of Apple’s labs and onto users’ heads soon, so those of us who are still excited about the technology can start getting accustomed to the future.

Lizzo and Harry Styles performing 'Juice' is all you need today - CNN

The former One Direction member, whose new solo album hit No. 1 last month, showed up Thursday night at Lizzo's Miami Beach concert.
It was quite the moment when Styles stepped up in his sweater vest to rock the mic, as evidenced by the social media frenzy it set off.
SiriusXM, which along with Pandora sponsored Lizzo's pre-Super Bowl weekend show, tweeted some of the excitement.
Styles is a big fan of Lizzo and is more than familiar with the tune.
"She's one of the most exciting artists working now for sure," he said at the time. "She's exactly what you want an artist to be, which is themselves."
The feeling is clearly mutual.
Lizzo shared Styles' comments about her on her official Twitter account, writing "*melts*" along with the head-exploding and happiness emojis.

10 Best Style Releases We Saw This Week - Gear Patrol

There’s no shortage of new goods rolling out of the sewing factories and onto shelves each week. Out of all the new style releases that came across our desks this week, these are the best things we saw.

Converse Patchwork Chuck 70 Sneakers

Re-issuing an archival sneaker silhouette from the 1970s using upgraded materials was probably one of the best decisions Converse has made in years. These patchwork joints might be the next.

3sixteen x Schott Jackets

A double header from specialty denim brand 3sixteen and heritage outerwear label Schott, we couldn’t pick just one.

Jacques Marie Mage White Light Sunglasses

We’re fans of Velvet Underground and we’re fans of Jacques Marie Mage, so we’re definitely fans of these sunglasses.

J.Crew Organic Cotton Half-Zip Sweater

Long live the half-zip sweater! This is by no means a style that’s hot off the factory floor, but this one’s done in organic cotton, just in time for spring.

Persol Titanium Collection

Persol’s Titanium Collection looks as good as we thought it was gonna. Made in Japan featuring titanium single-piece temples with Guilloche engraving, it’s the only thing allowed to touch my face (other those John Cale-inspired sunnies).

Salomon XT-4 Advanced

The latest season of French shoe brand Salomon has brought back its popular kicks with proprietary quicklace systems and Agile Chassis Systems for superior stability. Now, they comes with graphics.

Topman Corduroy Zip Overshirt

More zippered shirts in 2020.

Eastman Leather Clothing Tanker Boots

When Eastman Leather Company and John Lofgren come together, it’s not for nothing. These boots are reproductions of WWII boots originally designed with General Patton and are maybe just as rare.

Saman Amel Silk-Blend Shirt

It’s a polo shirt. It’s a cardigan. It’s everything.

Noon Goons Throttle Jeans

The world has enough olive drab fatigue pants and off-white painter’s pants. Noon Goons’ gives you what you really want with these all-cotton bottle green painters pants.

The Surprising New Style Trend of 2020

grey_placeholder

Originally hugging the waists of countless hikers and backpackers, the fanny pack entered the fashion zeitgeist, migrating to the shoulders of stylish sets, slung across the body. People called them shoulder bags, cross-body bags, saccoches, side bags, even messenger bags. They were all variations on a theme, each with their slight differences. The worst was undoubtedly ‘murse’, an unnecessary portmanteau akin to metrosexual, used as a veil for phobias at worse and a dated term at best. Now, we’re fully where we need to be and we’re calling a spade a spade. Read the Story
