It’s a matter of style at the Union-Tribune - The San Diego Union-Tribune

A reader wrote to the Readers’ Rep recently saying the possessive punctuation on the name Susan Davis was incorrect.

The story mentioned her retirement from the House of Representatives and referred to “Davis’ seat.” The reader said it should have read “Davis’s seat.”

The punctuation in the story was correct. But the reader was also correct — depending on the style source.

According to Merriam-Webster, “for names that end in an s or z sound ... you can either add ’s or just an apostrophe. Going with ’s is the more common choice.”

But the Union-Tribune, like most newspapers, follows style from The Associated Press Stylebook. That source says to use just an apostrophe with names ending in s. A name ending in z takes an apostrophe followed by an s.

The U-T generally adheres to the AP style. However, it will deviate occasionally. AP updates its style regularly. For instance it now says the % symbol can be used. The U-T, however, has decided to stay with the word “percent” in text. Also AP has updated its style on “Internet.” It says to use a lower-case i, but the U-T has continued to use an upper-case I. And AP suggests “asylum-seeker” with a hyphen as a noun; the U-T spells it as two words as a noun.

AP has an online style guide at a cost of around $25 a year. The online version also provides an “Ask the Editor” feature where people can pose questions about current style.

AP also produces an annual hard copy stylebook. It would be an excellent addition to the libraries of wordsmiths out there. The stylebook also contains definitions and sections on sports, weather, weapons, punctuation and media law.

Readers can follow style on the AP Stylebook Facebook page — “AP Stylebook.” (It has more than 87,000 followers. A post Tuesday on the word “preheat” attracted 149 comments.)

U-T promotional spot

Readers who watch Fox News Channel, CNN, MSNBC, ESPN, Hallmark, HGTV and the History Channel might see a promotional ad for the U-T called “Know Your Community.” The 30-second spot, done in-house by U-T videographers, will begin airing Monday.

Readers can also view the spot by going to YouTube and typing “San Diego Union-Tribune Know Your Community” in the search bar.
