I don't generally take shots at peoples' personal style around here. That's because (again, generally) there's no joy in going after folks who are just minding their own business and trying to look their best while doing it. Sometimes, though, an exception must be made. And when you're a Republican congressman standing in front of the world so you can moan about the "impeachment sham" and defend our Very Normal Letter-writing president, you no longer get the benefit of the doubt.
Which brings us to Greg Steube. He's the representative of Florida's 17th congressional district, which I have just learned includes North Port, Punta Gorda, Venice, and Okeechobee. (Geography! Neat!) It also, I am forced to assume, includes a number of questionable men's stores. That number might be one, or it might be far higher. I cannot say—though I'm inclined to say there must be a few. I'm guessing high because I have laid eyes upon Mr. Steube's outfit for today's proceedings, which led me down a rabbit hole of other Greg Steube outfits, and let me tell you: This guy loves to make a statement.
Today's statement? Well...
I cannot help but think of this as the try-hard trifecta of iffy men's style. The first component: the jerk shirt, which is the colloquial name for those shirts with a contrasting collar and cuffs, earned because they are so often worn by un-ironic Gordon Gekko acolytes and other assorted jerks. The second component: the mismatched vest, which is a cousin of the lonely waistcoat and just as sad. And the third component is Big Blue, the nickname I just gave that vast expanse of pocket square sticking out of Steube's breast pocket.
Greg? Can I call you Greg? The outfit doesn't play. Go home. Change. Put on a shirt in either one solid color or one pattern. Lose the vest. Replace the pocket square with something that doesn't look like a napkin from a royal blue-themed wedding, and tuck it in a little further this time. Then? Stay home. We've already seen enough of you for this lifetime.
