While on his way to play a show, Fred Eaglesmith pulled over to help someone broken down on the side of the road. He was surprised to find that the stranger in need of help was meant to open for him. The two musicians fell in love, and will perform at the Chico Women’s Club together Jan. 26.
Eaglesmith and his wife, Tif Ginn, have now been performing together for five years.
When asked how he would describe his musical style, Eaglesmith simply said, “I don’t. It changes all the time. I don’t play one particular style anymore. I’m whatever they call me because I’m all the things … It’s more of a show than a style.”
Though undefined, his style has shifted from country to bluegrass to folk to anything and everything in between. He finds it’s easiest to define it as rock ‘n’ roll, for the genre “includes everything.”
Eaglesmith has been a songwriter for 15 years. “The (songwriting) process just keeps changing,” he said. He goes through seasons of burning through pages to write a single song, to simply writing it on one page. Currently, he’s in a season of the former, making revision after revision until his lyrics are refined.
This will not be the musical couple’s first show in Chico. This time, the audience will get a little taste of their newest album, “Alive.” “It’s got a lot of comedy and a lot of talking and a lot of songs. We’re very happy with it,” Eaglesmith said. “It’s a bit like going to rock ‘n’ roll church. I’m the belligerent preacher.”
Between songs, listeners will find comedic monologues and banter between Eaglesmith and Ginn. “It’s fun and funny; not too serious,” he said.
On stage, Ginn plays 10 or so different instruments — some at the same time, including guitar, bass, drums, ukulele, accordion, clarinet, bongos, banjo and obo.
The couple is set perform at 8 p.m. Jan. 26 at the Chico Women’s Club, 592 E. Third St.
