Live from New York Harry Styles appeared on Saturday Night Live last night as both host and musical guest. He is the 33rd such artist to pull this trick, joining the ranks of Paul Simon, Brittany Spears, Willie Nelson and Taylor Swift to do double duty. (Garth Brooks and Chris Gaines both hosted in 1998, but even though they look a lot a like, they are totally different guys.)
In his opening monologue, while noodling at the piano, the musician and Dunkirk co-star joked “I'm not in a boy band anymore, I'm in a man band.” But he did give a shout-out to his old chums in One Direction. “I love those guys. They're my brothers. Niall [Horan], Liam [Payne], Louis [Tomlinson], and, uh...” he vamped to cheers and chuckles as he struggled to remember the fifth person's name. “Ringo! Yeah, that's it.”
The audience at NBC's Studio 8H “wooo”-ed at the gag—an apparent reference to Zayn Malik, who left the group at its peak—but on Twitter the partisans of #TeamHarry and #TeamZayn immediately took to typing.
The Harry-haters accused the British singer of being ungrateful and having “bat symbol” hair, among other charges.
The Harry-supporters merely delighted in anointing him a Shady King.
The One Direction schism goes all the way back to 2015 when Zayn Malik decided to leave the group brought into the world under Simon Cowell's tutelage five years prior. There have been public zings between he and the remaining members of the band but Harry has mainly stayed out of it.
What is most puzzling is Styles' suggestion that Zayn is the Ringo Starr of One Direction. Even a modest Beatles historian knows that it was Paul McCartney who left the Fab Four first. Moreover, everybody liked Ringo. Even when the ex-Beatles were at total war, Ringo was the one guy who did nothing but increase detente. From those contentious years immediately following the breakup, Ringo can be heard on George Harrison's All Things Must Pass, on John Lennon and Yoko Ono's albums Plastic Ono Band and Imagine and Paul appeared on Ringo's album Sentimental Journey. Hell, Ringo even showed up for sessions on Yoko's album Fly.
Should things continue to escalate, the sides have got to do better research.
